Choreographer Joop Oonk (1989) studied at Codarts and obtained a Masters in Dance Studies from the University of Surrey and a Masters in Directing from the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts.
Since 2013, she has been active in the inclusive performing arts and founded her own dance company, Misiconi, in Rotterdam. Misiconi is an inclusive dance company that focuses on inequality.
Oonk combines depth, reflection and visual aesthetics in her work, and challenges the audience to think differently about human bodies and movement. She experiments with mobility, physical differences and sensory experience, and creates an equal interaction between audience and performers. Oonk, born in Thailand and raised in Oman, sees the world through a unique lens and her work addresses various social and theoretical issues. Her drive for inclusion and diversity was fueled by her internship at Stopgap Dance Company. As artistic director of Misiconi and in other board positions, she hopes to share her knowledge with fellow makers and colleagues.
